What people abroad ask us most
Do I have to travel to Colombia for my procedure?
In most cases, no. With a properly granted power of attorney we can represent you before notaries, courts and public and private entities.
How do I grant a power of attorney from abroad?
Depending on the procedure, you can do it at the Colombian consulate, before a notary in your country of residence with an apostille (and an official translation if it is not in Spanish) or, for court proceedings, by electronic message as permitted by Law 2213 of 2022. We will tell you which one your case needs.
Can I handle an estate if I live outside Colombia?
Yes. If the heirs agree, the estate can be settled before a notary through a legal representative. If they do not agree, it goes through the courts, and we can represent you there as well.
What should I do if my child was wrongfully taken to or kept in another country?
Colombia is a party to the 1980 Hague Convention on International Child Abduction. We advise you on requesting the child’s return through the ICBF as the Central Authority and support you throughout the process. In these cases, acting quickly is key.
A debt or loan I never applied for appears in my name. What should I do?
It may be identity theft. We file a claim with the institution and the credit bureaus, request removal of the negative report under the habeas data law (Law 1266 of 2008, amended by Law 2157 of 2021) and, where appropriate, file a criminal complaint. Keep every message, statement and record you have.
Why screen the seller or buyer against sanctions lists?
Because dealing with someone linked to illegal activities can expose you to losing the property through asset forfeiture, to frozen bank accounts or to being associated with lists such as OFAC. Before closing the deal we screen the other party against sanctions lists and background sources, and keep a record of that due diligence, which helps you prove your good faith.
How do I pay the fees from abroad?
We accept electronic card payments and bank transfers. Before we start, we send you our fee proposal in writing.
How long will my matter take?
It depends on the type of procedure and the institution. In our initial proposal we give you a realistic estimate, and we keep you informed at every stage.
